At the height of America’s golden age, the Pledge of Allegiance and the foundations of the United States are crumbling under a wave of disrespect.
Since Francis Bellamy crafted the pledge in 1892, its purpose has been to unify the nation and promote patriotism.
However, the neglect shown by the citizens of this country has threatened to destroy its purpose and most importantly, the future unity of the nation. While the Pledge of Allegiance is optional to recite, it is important to show respect for the American flag by standing.
“No one else recites the Pledge of Allegiance, so I do not,” freshman James O’Brien said.
This statement reflects the growing trend among students who view patriotism as abnormal. Yet, as people recite the Pledge of Allegiance, we must remember all the soldiers who died or were wounded in combat to preserve our freedoms. The pledge serves as a creed for service members overseas who fight to protect our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
During the FIFA World Cup, many citizens from other countries take great pride in singing their national anthems with passion and enthusiasm. This display of love for one’s country highlights the importance of patriotism in the global arena and serves as a reminder for Americans to embrace and respect our own traditions.
Recently, NFL fans accused Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce of “disrespectful” behavior during the national anthem. While quarterback Patrick Mahomes stood still, Kelce was seen jumping around, a gesture some interpreted as showing a lack of respect during a patriotic moment. When given the opportunity to represent our nation at sporting events, athletes should feel a deep sense of pride and honor in that privilege.
As people approach America’s 250th birthday and the FIFA World Cup, which the United States will host, it is crucial to remember the true meaning of the pledge and the importance of respecting it.
