This year’s gymnastics team is building momentum after a strong 2024-2025 season, where they secured the VHSL Class 5 state runner-up title.
“Last year, eight seniors graduated who were a key factor in helping Ocean Lakes gymnastics,” senior and captain Yasmin Williams said. “Due to these losses, everyone doubted us coming into the new season and expected us to be an easy team to beat.”
What has happened is actually quite the opposite, and they have gotten off to a strong 8-2 start to their season as of Jan. 21.
By mixing new energy with experienced leadership, the team proves they are still a top contender in the Beach District.
“Freshman Alina Gallop is new to the team this year and is making great strides with each meet,” head coach Jennifer Ramey said. “Sophomores Ashley Goodman and Amelia Green have definitely stepped up this year as all-around competitors as well.”
With the eight seniors leaving, every girl has had to step up in terms of skill and leadership.
“My role has grown from learning the dynamics of the team as a sophomore to helping shape it as a senior,” Yasmin said.
Practicing Monday through Thursday 2:15 to 4:30 p.m., the girls work hard to be the best team they can be, according to Ramey.
Though the team has talent, their success is built on far more than skill. It’s the result of a new focus for the season.
“I think this season we are focused on having more fun, while also working hard and improving as a team,” sophomore Ashley Goodman said. “This season I really wanted to rediscover the passion and joy for the sport.”
Joy is something this team prioritizes, and it shows in every meet.
“We would love to make it back to the state tournament as a team this year,” Ramey said. “We would also like to see many of the team members qualify individually for the state tournament.”
The team is expecting great things heading into regionals, and they are already off to a great start.
“For my final year, I want it to be remembered for defying the odds,” Yasmin said.
