For months, the echoes in the mat room have sounded different. Not the celebratory roar of a pin or the frustrated grunt of a takedown, but the rhythmic thump of feet on mats and the heavy breathing of athletes pushing past their limits.
While other students enjoyed summer downtime and fall holidays, the Ocean Lakes Wrestling Team was occupied by forging their upcoming success. Not every offseason practice looked the same, and coaches pride themselves on diversifying how they are crafting this generation of wrestlers.
“We run a very solid year-round program with [many] opportunities to lift, wrestle and go to wrestling events,” head coach Christopher Barnhart said. “We hope this helps all the wrestlers find success in match situations and self-improvement.”
The team excelled in advancing their younger wrestlers this offseason; they have adapted to both the culture and technique of the mat room. The growth was evident in a recent scrimmage against Princess Anne High School (PAHS).
“The young guys really excelled in our scrimmage against PAHS,” senior captain Aidan Nichols said. “I was surprised to see the amount of energy and focus that was present on the mats.”
Despite a rather challenging schedule, the team is excited for the Toys for Tots tournament in December and the John Kelly Invitational in January 2026. These events afford wrestlers the opportunity to wrestle teams and individuals they otherwise wouldn’t be able to in the regular season.
The team’s first match on Dec. 2, ended in a victory over Cape Henry, Maury and Princess Anne. The next match is scheduled for Dec. 17, at Kellam High School against Kellam and Green Run.
“I am excited for what the season holds,” junior Gabe Williams said. “We have made a lot of progress this offseason as a team and individually.”
